American Literature (High School Requirement)

In this class we will meet weekly to discuss and engage American literary classics that have been assigned for the week. Learn how to actively read a piece of literature and dive into these great stories of times past. Discover how we can learn from and how they relate to us in today's world. Class Description

In this course, we will meet the state standards required for high school graduation as we study the great writers and poets from Bradstreet to Bradbury; the Puritans to the Harlem Renaissance. Over 2 semesters, each era in American Literature (1630-1960) will be covered. Students will enhance their critical thinking skills and develop their understanding of American Literature. Our weekly class sessions will provide a time of interaction between the students and teacher where they will engage in meaningful discussions of our weekly active readings and assignments; conduct presentations; and participate in group projects and collaborative assignments. This class will include the study of poetry and short stories, novel reviews, literary devices, composition, timed writings, and thesis statements.

Supplies: Students will need to purchase the following items Novels to be read in class

Prerequisites Student must be in 10th, 11th or 12th grade. Student must be able to write complete and succinct paragraphs so as to comprise a 5 paragraph essay.
