Class Description

Description:  This is the second semester of a two-semester biochemistry sequence that will introduce the student to the area of biochemistry as it relates to disease. This class will look at the connections between pathological psychiatry, disease, and biochemistry. We will discover the complex chemical processes that occur in the body and brain and how these are related to physiological and pathological mental illness. Pathological conditions are physical conditions that are caused by a disease.

The second semester we will study disease as it relates to biochemistry. We will look at abnormal biochemical processes in human disease. The first semester was an introduction to biochemistry including complex cellular metabolic processes and their interconnection into tightly regulated physiological networks.

The two courses can be taken independently of one another.

Taken together, the two semesters are a year-long course and are designed to meet the ‘G’ requirement in the CA ‘A-G’ requirements. Please check with your charter school or other to ensure that they will accept this.

Course Objectives:

  • Understand the biochemical basis of disease

  • Discover the connection between biochemistry and psychological conditions

  • Discover the connection between biochemistry and physiological disease

About the Instructor

Heather Vargas

Heather Vargas has 25 years experience in teaching, 19 of those homeschooling her 5 children. Two are in college now - the first is pursuing degrees in physics and global studies at UC Berkeley and the second is studying political science and psychology at San Diego State, while the youngest ones are still homeschooled. Having attended UCLA for undergraduate and graduate school and earning a degree in molecular and cellular biology, science and math are a specialty. After many years of creating and teaching her own homeschool curriculum, she is able to supply and teach curriculum in all subjects.
