Biochemistry (Semester 1): General Biochemistry
This is the first semester of a two-semester biochemistry sequence that will introduce the student to the rapidly changing subject area of biochemistry as it relates to eukaryotic cells. We will begin with a brief introduction to biochemistry, followed by an indepth look at the structure, function, kinetics, and regulation of enzymes. After developing an appreciation for these molecular machines, we will begin to explore complex cellular metabolic processes and their interconnection into tightly regulated physiological networks.
The second semester we will study disease as it relates to biochemistry. We will look at abnormal biochemical processes in human disease. The two courses can be taken independently of one another.

Taken together, the two semesters are a year-long course and are designed to meet the ‘G’ requirement in the CA ‘A-G’ requirements. Please check with your charter school or other to ensure that they will accept this.
Course Objectives:
Introduce the student to the language of biochemistry.
Illustrate how the chemical principles learned in chemistry apply to biological situations, thus marrying together chemistry and biology.
Bring each student to a general understanding of and appreciation for the major biomolecules.
Have an understanding of the major metabolic pathways and their regulation and interaction.
Develop an awareness of how biochemical principles apply to various cross disciplinary areas of research

Heather Vargas has 25 years experience in teaching, 19 of those homeschooling her 5 children. Two are in college now - the first is pursuing a degree in Global Studies/Peace and Conflict at UC Berkeley and the second is studying Political Science and Psychology at San Diego State, while the youngest ones are still homeschooled. Having attended UCLA for undergraduate and graduate school and earning a degree in molecular and cellular biology, science and math are a specialty. After many years of creating and teaching her own homeschool curriculum, she is able to supply and teach curriculum in all subjects.
