Geometry A-G: Semester 2

3-10 students Open

I love math and I am excited to teach students to love math as well. I know math can be challenging, so I encourage students to acknowledge this and be open to learning and even making mistakes. Geometry is a critical component of mathematics education and students relate concepts from Algebra I to geometric phenomena. The relevance of geometry to everyday life will also be explored through practical applications.

Class Description

This course requires students to focus on logical proof and critical thinking when solving problems or evaluating arguments. It includes an in-depth analysis of plane, solid, and coordinate geometry as they relate to both abstract mathematical concepts as well as real-world problem situations. Topics include logic and proof, parallel lines and polygons, perimeter and area analysis, volume and surface area analysis, similarity and congruence, trigonometry, and analytic geometry. Emphasis will be placed on developing critical thinking skills as they relate to logical reasoning and argument.

This is a year-long course and is designed to meet the ‘C’ requirement in the ‘A-G’ requirements. Please check with your charter school or other to ensure that they will accept this. Upon request, I can provide a syllabus to be provided to your charter.

Course Objectives:

  • Recognize the basic principles of Geometry

  • Use deductive and inductive reasoning through writing proofs

  • Prove that lines are either parallel or perpendicular

  • Perform translations, reflections, rotations, dilations, and compositions of transformations

  • Apply theorems to prove congruent triangles

Heather Vargas has 25 years experience in teaching, 19 of those homeschooling her 5 children. Two are in college now - the first is pursuing a degree in Global Studies/Peace and Conflict at UC Berkeley and the second is studying Political Science and Psychology at San Diego State, while the youngest ones are still homeschooled. Having attended UCLA for undergraduate and graduate school and earning a degree in molecular and cellular biology, science and math are a specialty. After many years of creating and teaching her own homeschool curriculum, she is able to supply and teach curriculum in all subjects.
