Language Arts Semester 1 A-G*: Grades 7-11

4-12 students Standard

In this first semester of Language Arts, students will learn how to confidently and effectively express themselves through the written word. 

Students will read, understand, and respond to informational texts, read and respond to works of literature, write for different purposes and audiences, write clear and focused text to convey a well-defined perspective and appropriate content, listen critically, and respond intelligently as individuals or in group discussions, and apply knowledge of language to understand how language functions in different contexts.

Class Description

Course Description: English/Language arts covers literature, writing, poetry, current events, spelling, & grammar. Literary analysis will include: citing textual evidence, making inferences, literary analysis (figurative language, symbolism, allusion), tone/mood, & historical background. Poetry analysis will include many items from the literary analysis as well as rhyme scheme. Reading informational text will include: textual evidence, making inferences, central ideas, ethos/pathos/logos, background, & text annotation. Writing will cover: fictional writing, persuasive writing, poetry, research writing, informative writing, & narrative writing. There will be spelling/vocabulary assignments and quizzes. Grammar will be included to reinforce concepts.

January classes will be asynchronious.


The two semesters constitute a year-long course and are designed to meet the ‘B’ requirement in the ‘A-G’ requirements. Please check with your charter school or other to ensure that they will accept this.


Course Objectives: 

  • Students will read, understand, and respond to informational texts – with an emphasis on comprehension, vocabulary acquisition, and making connections among ideas and between texts with a focus on textual evidence. 

  • Students will read and respond to works of literature – with an emphasis on comprehension, vocabulary acquisition, and making connections among ideas and between texts with a focus on textual evidence.

  • Students will write for different purposes and audiences. Students will write clear and focused text to convey a well-defined perspective and appropriate content.

  • Students will present appropriately in formal speaking situations, listen critically, and respond intelligently as individuals or in group discussions.

  • Students will apply knowledge of language to understand how language functions in different contexts, to make effective choices for meaning or style, and to comprehend more fully when reading or listening.

About Heather Vargas

Heather Vargas has 25 years experience in teaching, 19 of those homeschooling her 5 children. Two are in college now - the first is pursuing a degree in Global Studies/Peace and Conflict at UC Berkeley and the second is studying Political Science and Psychology at San Diego State, while the youngest ones are still homeschooled. Having attended UCLA for undergraduate and graduate school and earning a degree in molecular and cellular biology, science and math are a specialty. After many years of creating and teaching her own homeschool curriculum, she is able to supply and teach curriculum in all subjects.
