Learn how to draw realistic portraits that capture the essence of your subject.

This course is an in-depth study of the portrait, including the ways to achieve the spark of life through emotions.

Class Description

The class will be guided through step-by-step instructions to learn the major structural characteristics to realistically render the eyes, nose, mouth, ears, and different types of hair. The basic diagram of a face and slight variations will be covered, while showing the correct placement of each feature. Learn how to correctly render skin by softly building up value, contours, and how to utilize the use of light and dark to render a form. Students will study how value progressions capture the effect of light to create a realistic portrait and will gain an understanding of facial expressions, by using slight and sometimes dramatic adjustments to the face and eyes to achieve an emotional response.

A variety of exercises, worksheets, and a mirror image drawing will be used to reinforce their individual skills.

As a final project, the student’s will draw a realistic portrait that comes to life, using a high definition photo of themselves or someone else.

*The photo must be approved by the teacher.

*Homework will be assigned*

*Independent Classwork on Final Project is required*

*Instructor will be available, if help is needed, outside of class*

I’ve been teaching Private Art Lessons to Home School and Public School Students for 15+ yrs., in their homes, to the present day and have been a Home School Coach for 4 years. Apart from Private Art lessons, I teach at a Charter School offering Beginning Art, Art 1, and Art 2 classes. As well as, teaching 7 Art classes at a Private School, in West Hollywood, for 6-12 graders, in all mediums and subject matter.
