Psychology: Semester 2 (A-G*)

4-12 students Standard

This Psychology class is the SECOND semester of a year-long course that is equivalent to a one semester introductory college course in psychology. This course is designed to meet the “G” requirement in the A-G course requirements. Please check with your charter school or other to ensure that they will accept this.

Psychology is a comprehensive study of the human mind and cognitive processes. Students will examine the structures of the brain and their involvement in human action and social interaction. The class will provide a rigorous examination of cognitive development, perception, comprehension, consciousness, and learning. The course will also involve an analysis of human emotion, psychological disorders and their treatments. This class offers an enlightening journey through the depths of the human mind.

Course Objectives: Upon the successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • identify major contributors to the field of Psychology
  • explain basic methods of psychological research
  • apply major theories and stages of development (from infancy through adulthood) to their own lives as well as those around them
  • describe basic parts and functions of the human brain
  • compare and contrast functions of the brain’s hemispheres
  • describe the research related to sleep and dreams
  • outline the principles involved in sensation and perception
  • break down and illustrate the principles and techniques surrounding classical and operant conditioning
  • recall and explain the cognitive theorists’ approach to the study of emotions
  • describe and evaluate the major schools of personality theory
  • summarize the major causes, symptoms, treatment, and prognoses of various psychological disorders including, but not limited to, anxiety, dissociative, personality, and mood, as well as schizophrenia
  • explain and differentiate between the various forms of psychotherapy ranging from psychoanalysis to cutting edge biological approaches to treatment
  • demonstrate a mastery of the various theories pertaining to Social Psychology.

About Heather Vargas

Heather Vargas has 25 years experience in teaching, 19 of those homeschooling her 5 children. Two are in college now - the first is pursuing a degree in Global Studies/Peace and Conflict at UC Berkeley and the second is studying Political Science and Psychology at San Diego State, while the youngest ones are still homeschooled. Having attended UCLA for undergraduate and graduate school and earning a degree in molecular and cellular biology, science and math are a specialty. After many years of creating and teaching her own homeschool curriculum, she is able to supply and teach curriculum in all subjects.
