The 7 Elements of Art

2-6 students Standard

Do you have a creative and aspiring artist at home? Or maybe you are looking for a fun elective for your student? Look no further! Ms. Hillary will show that being a good artist isn't just about drawing or painting well, it's also about learning how to observe and see what is in front of you.

Class Description

In this class we'll focus on the building blocks or foundation of all art. These 7 elements are: Line, Space, Shape, Texture, Form, Color, and Value.  We will also learn through the study of famous artists and their works. By taking the time to learn about others' art we connect to the past and practice critical thinking.

In class, students will build self confidence while they share their work as well as comment on their classmates' work.  Unless we are working on something abstract, I encourage using observation to create art by having the object in front of you. For example: if I were drawing an apple, while looking at an actual apple, I can better notice the shape, color, highlights and shadows. If I relied on my memory or worked from a photograph, I might miss these details. As artists, we are trying to create an illusion of something that is 3D, but on a 2D surface.

All assignments will include at least one or more of the 7 elements of art. For example, we can learn about the different types of line and how to use it to create a dynamic composition, or understand how color can create a mood or a feeling. Come join in on the fun! Get creative, curious, and be inspired!

This class may be considered for elective credit for high school students. Please submit to your charter school for final approval.
