Class Description

Beyond the Book is a high school age level book club aimed to inspire young readers through exposing them to great literature. I strive to help students grow in their love of reading as well as their comprehension, literacy, creativity, imagination, analytical, and critical thinking skills. During each 12 week course we will explore three different novels that are linked through genre/theme/subject matter. Each week students will have assigned reading to complete and we will meet together to dig deeper, discussing and analyzing what we have read and participating in friendly debate. Reading has a multitude of benefits from improving literacy levels to producing humans who understand better the world they live in. Books help us to know ourselves. It is my goal that students will appreciate the way good literature can continue to teach, inspire, and impact us well after we have finished reading the last page of the book we hold in our hands. Please note: There will be minimal homework, usually a short journaling exercise, that students will need to complete in addition to the assigned reading each week.

This class may be considered for elective credit for high school students. Please submit to your charter school for final approval.

Class size: 6-10 students

Supplies: Students will need to purchase the following items

• We will cover three books in each book club session. Students must borrow or purchase these books ahead of time. Book list will be provided.

Prerequisites

Adequate reading level to be able to read and comprehend age appropriate novels.
