This literature course is designed to guide middle school students to develop reading comprehension skills. We will be learning techniques in close reading, literary analysis, interpreting

information and making logical connections within a text.

Class Description

We will be studying the short story as a meaningful literary form. Emphasis will be placed on understanding the structure and

technique. The following short stories will be examined during this course: “The Hockey Sweater” by Roch Carrier, “The Necklace” by Guy de Maupassant, “All Summer in a Day” by Ray Bradbury, “Amigo Brothers” by Piri Thomas, “Lose Now, Pay Later” by Carol Farley, “The Fun They Had” by Issac Asimov, “Zoo” by Edward D.

Hoch, “The Lady or the Tiger?” by Frank Stockton, “The Ransom of Red Chief” by O. Henry, “The Monkey's Paw” by W.W. Jacobs, and “The Tell-Tale Heart” by Edgar Allan Poe


Students are expected to complete the following requirements:


1. Attend all class sessions.

2. Complete the reading assignment for each week before the class session.

3. Complete all writing assignments for each week before the class session.

About Joe Gutel

Coach Joe grew up in Bangkok, Thailand where his first job was teaching ESL to 1st graders when he was 16 years old. It was at that early age when he discovered his love and passion for teaching. Now, with over 20 years of professional teaching experience, he has taught children and adults of all ages in both formal and informal settings.
